A Foodie Friday

Guys, I have a new favorite breakfast to share with you. I’ve always been a fan of hot cereals – oatmeal, farina, cream of rice, cream of wheat, cream of barley…you name it. I know, aside from oatmeal, those are all pretty unusual favorites, but I can’t help myself!

While perusing the grocery store aisles recently, I came across the Kashi GoLean Hearty Honey Cinnamon Hot Cereal and decided to give it a whirl.

It’s SO delicious! I made it with vanilla almond milk (my new-found love) and topped my bowl with fresh blueberries and a few chopped almonds. I have a feeling this will be a breakfast staple for me this fall and winter.

Being Chefs!

In other foodie news…Last night AJ and I put his birthday present from me to use. We took a Northern Italian cooking class at Home Cooking New York. After work we made our way down to Chinatown/Little Italy for this 2 hour class. Our instructor led the class but we were all involved in the chopping and stirring and rolling out of the various ingredients as she taught us how to make 4 different savory dishes:

  • Classic Parmigiano Risotto with Zucchini-Lemon
  • Fresh Ricotta Gnocchi
  • Braised Pork Ragout (that went on top of the gnocchi)
  • Garlicky Broccoli Rabe

There were 8 of us total (including the instructor), so the evening had a nice intimate vibe to it. And at the end of the class we all sat down as a group to enjoy our meals. An added bonus, we all got printouts of the recipes to take home, so I will definitely be trying these again.

I snapped a photo of our Ricotta Gnocchi with the Pork Ragout. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures of our other dishes! I was too busy shoveling them into my mouth.

I’m patting myself on the back for this gift, it was such a fun experience, and we learned a lot!

Remembering

Finally, not to be a debbie downer, but I would be remiss if I didn’t touch upon the fact that today is 9/11. While I didn’t live in NYC when the attacks happened (I was still in high school), like most Americans, that day and the subsequent days, are ones I’ll never forget.

My first job out of college 8 years ago was in the World Financial Center, and my office directly overlooked Ground Zero. At that time they were still doing construction and the whole site was still just a big hole. It was a daily reminder of what happened a few years before and how many of those people were going to work or in their offices, just like me.

I’m sure a lot of you have seen the photos posted yesterday showing the rainbow arching over Manhattan and ending at the World Trade Center, and I just felt like this was such a positive picture to share as we still remember and are saddened by the loss, there’s the hope of a new day and new life.
