Friday Favorites #13

Well, hello there Friday! I’ve been waiting for you 🙂

Here’s a look at some of the things I’ve been loving this week. Buckle up, it’s a wordy one today, but I included lots of pictures for you too!

Dinners (and Brunches) Out

These past few days have been chock full of good food, none of which I made myself.

Sunday included brunch with our friend Joe at Jacob’s Pickles, one of my absolute favorite Upper West Side restaurants. This place serves comfort food to the max. If you only have to wait an hour for a table you should consider yourself lucky, but it’s well worth it.

The boys got these ridiculous Bloody Marys (I opted for something lighter!) and we split a platter of pickles, red beets, and brussels sprouts to start.

I have been craving their Buttermilk Fried Chicken Caesar Salad for months and couldn’t wait to dig into this. I inhaled about 2/3 of it in the restaurant and then polished off the rest when I got home.

Monday night was dinner out with AJ’s family for my sister-in-law Alyssa’s birthday (minus AJ, who was traveling for work 😦 ). Upon the suggestion of my father-in-law, we ventured deep into Chinatown to Hou Yi Hot Pot.

Our meal reminded me of an Asian-style fondue. You have “hot pots” in the middle of your table filled with broths of your choosing. You then select meats, seafood, veggies, dumplings, etc. to cook in the boiling broth. It was actually pretty tasty! I enjoyed it over a bed of rice and a side of soy sauce.

On Wednesday night I made my way across the Hudson River to Jersey City where I met up with my friend Nikki for a much needed catch up dinner! We tried out LITM where we decided to split an order of wings, blackened catfish and shrimp tacos, and chorizo mac and cheese. We washed it all down with some red wine (thanks happy hour prices!). Such a fun night!

And now I need to eat vegetables for a month…too much food!

The Intern

the intern

After brunch on Sunday, AJ and I decided to watch The Intern, the Robert De Niro, Anne Hathaway movie that came out last year. Ohmygosh. I’m a sucker when it comes to sweet, elderly gentlemen and this movie is about a widowed retiree (De Niro) who becomes bored staying home and finds a job as a senior citizen intern at an internet start up company. Between his daily suits and ties, his dedication to his job and learning the technology (including setting up a facebook page!), and his “grandfatherly” advice…tears, tears everywhere.

This movie was so cute and heartwarming. I laughed, I cried (<–which then made AJ laugh). I highly recommend!

We Olive & Wine Bar

Last year I found a Groupon for a wine and olive oil tasting at this little Brooklyn shop called We Olive & Wine Bar. AJ and I went one night after work where we enjoyed small plates, wine, and lots of olive oil and vinegar tastings. It was pretty quiet that night so we got a lot of attention from the staff, including some extra samples. By the end of our night we walked out of there with full bellies, a bottle of their housemade Meyer lemon olive oil, and an Apple Balsamic Vinegar.

We were in Brooklyn again last Saturday and decided to stop in to check out their goodies. After tasting nearly all of their oils and vinegars we opted for a bottle of their traditional balsamic. Can’t wait to drizzle it on some bread and mozzarella!

Gwen Stefani

Alright, this one is a bit random. I’ve never had any feelings strong feelings about Gwen Stefani. I knew I liked some of her songs and thought she had a good voice, but that was about it.

Well, I caught her live music video during the Grammy’s of her new single Make Me Like You and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since. Obsessed is the word, I think. I’ve also discovered two other songs of hers that I’m loving, Baby Don’t Lie and Used to Love You.

NYC

AJ sent me this aerial shot after his plane took off on Monday night. How cool is this!? Look closely and you’ll see uptown Manhattan and Central Park in the forefront, the lights of midtown (hello Times Square!), and even the spire of the Freedom Tower at the very tip of the island. Loving this view.

From the Interwebs:

What Level of Introvert Are You? – As a natural introvert and lover of BuzzFeed quizzes, I had to take this personality questionnaire. I got Functional Introvert.

I think this is generally true, but not totally. I definitely lean towards the introverted side of the spectrum. I’m pretty quiet, especially in groups (I prefer to think things through before speaking up), I love my alone time, and it is an absolute necessity after a busy day or social outings to regroup and recharge.

However, I also really enjoy hanging out with my friends and I wouldn’t say I hate being the center of attention if the circumstance is right – I loved it at all events leading up to and including my wedding last year and thought my surprise 30th birthday party was a blast! 😉

This article about extroverted introverts really hit the nail on the head for me. Maybe some of you can relate!
