I hope you all had a great Memorial Day weekend! Mine was a good mix of being both busy and restful. We had a great few days and heading back to a busy work week is feeling a little rough this morning. Here’s a look at what we’ve been up to this holiday weekend.
My office closed at 2pm on Friday, and I was more than happy to start the weekend early. I met up with AJ on my way home, who was working from a local Starbucks and we ran some errands before coming home. I still can’t believe the heat wave we’ve been having and the first thing I did upon walking into the apartment was cranking up the air conditioning.
I whipped up an early dinner before we made our way to Hell’s Kitchen to meet up with one of my girlfriends Nikki and her boyfriend Sean for a double date! We met at The Cannery for a quick drink before our reservation at Bar Nine.
I love dueling pianos and last year we brought my sister and brother-in-law to this bar where we all had an excellent time, so I was very excited to go back with Nikki and Sean. We all sang along, had plenty of drinks and food, and the boys even got us to play a few games of skeeball that were in the back of the bar. We ended up leaving around midnight, which was definitely a late night out for us!
Saturday morning came quickly, especially after our late night, but we both woke up pretty easily because we had a busy and exciting day ahead. AJ and I are realizing that we’re outgrowing our current apartment. It’s been the perfect place for us to start out, and I love the Upper West Side location, but the lack of storage and the 4th floor walk-up aspect of the place is starting to get a bit old, so we’re coming to terms that it’s time to make a move.
Now, AJ would love to go straight to the New Jersey suburbs. However, I am a city girl and am not quite ready to make that jump, so we’re narrowing our search down to Hoboken, NJ. If you’re unfamiliar with Hoboken, it’s a small city (1 square mile) right across the Hudson River from Manhattan. The demographic is interesting, I look at it as having two distinct groups – a mix of 20-somethings right out of college and young families.
Hoboken also has a great downtown, vibrant restaurant and bar scene, it’s conveniently located, so it just feels like the right next step for us. We decided to dive right in and start looking at apartments to see what’s on the market. We must have looked at close to 15 on Saturday! It was exhausting, but also a lot of fun.
We saw a huge range of some not-so-nice apartments, to some that were a little too nice for our budget. However, we definitely got a good sense of what we want, and fortunately AJ and I are very much on the same page when it comes to house hunting.
When our apartment search concluded, we had worked up quite an appetite, so we met up with AJ’s family once we got back to Manhattan, since his parents were in town for the day for a dinner of Chinese takeout. Yum!
Sunday was another scorcher! Temperatures reaching 90 degrees meant that being outside was inevitably sweaty, but it was too gorgeous to stay cooped up inside all day, so my sister-in-law Alyssa and I made plans for an afternoon in Central Park.
Since we had some girl time planned, AJ decided to spend the afternoon with some of his high school buddies in NJ. I was very excited for a girls day of Skinnygirl Margaritas, snacks, and girl talk! (And lots of sunblock!)
Once we had enough of the heat, we made a trip to HomeGoods. Alyssa is also moving to Hoboken this summer and we had fun finding decorating and furniture ideas for our future apartments!
Following our shopping trip, we stopped at Gabriela’s Restaurant for a Mexican dinner. We filled up on more margaritas and chips while waiting for our table.
Once dinner was over, I made my way home and watched a little TV waiting for AJ to get home. The heat was getting to me though, and I actually ended up sleeping on the couch Sunday night. Unfortunately we don’t have AC in our bedroom and it was just so dang hot, I couldn’t get comfortable. So around 2am, after a couple hours of fitful sleep, I grabbed my pillow and relocated to the cool living room. Fingers crossed tonight is better!
Yesterday ended up being the most relaxing, and it was much needed. I kicked off the day with a Jillian Michaels workout, did some serious Netflixing while taking care of a few work emails, made a grocery shopping trip for the week, made a batch of my Chicken Salad for lunches, and even fit in a short afternoon nap.
AJ made his homemade pizza for dinner, which was the perfect way to wrap up a few days off!
Last but not least, I don’t want to forget the true reason behind our long holiday weekend, and a big thank you for the men and women who serve and protect our country!
